General Information

Title: Bumble Bee Watch Data
Abstract: Bumble Bee Watch is a collaborative effort to track and conserve North America’s bumble bees. Bumble Bee Watch is a community science project through the partnership of The Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation, York University, the University of Ottawa, Wildlife Preservation Canada, BeeSpotter, The Natural History Museum, London, and the Montreal Insectarium. Bumble bee species occurrence data included in this dataset is derived from photo-based observations of bumble bees collected and submitted by community scientists in the United States and Canada. These data will help researchers determine the status and conservation needs of bumble bees; Help locate rare or endangered populations of bumble bees; and Learn about bumble bees, their ecology, and ongoing conservation efforts.

Private Records

There is an option to submit records as private. The intention of this setting is to obscure the exact location of sensitive/endangered species on maps. Currently, private records do not appear on the map. In development, we may provide the option to have Private records displayed on the map on bumblebeewatch.org as a random location polygon that overlaps the exact point location. When requested (and approved), we share private records in data extracts with the following conditions: (1) The exact location and point attributes may not be published; (2) The points may be used on a static map as long as the map scale is smaller than or equal to 1:1,000,000; (3) The points may be displayed on an interactive map when the map scale is less than or equal to 1:1,000,000 (except on Bumble Bee Watch where it may display as a random polygon), and no attributes other than the species name, date, and verification status can be displayed. These data may be shared with additional interested parties as long as the conditions outlined here about use of the data follow the records as they are shared.
